Hot NBA News for 2007

Craig Rad asked:

Not long ago, on the April 4, Charlotte Bobcats won with 122 against Washington who scored 102. Throughout this game, Gerald Wallace had 34 points and 14 rebounds, Walter Herrman 21, Emeka Okafor scored 17 points and 13 rebounds and Raymond Felton had 17 points.

From the opposite team, Gilbert Arenas had 33 points, but this couldn’t change their score over the Bobcats, thus the Wizards’ chain of lost games unfortunately continues. The Washington Wizards seem to be out of luck since this is the 5th lost game out of 7 played. Roy Hibbert is Bobcats’ second junior and third center. He is compared to Zydrunas Ilgauskas and he has a great potential on the defensive end.

Detroit won over Indiana with a score of 100 to 85 points. Tayshaun Prince scored 24 points for the winning team and Richard Hamilton had 19 points. Jermaine O’Neal scored 20 points and 7 rebounds for Indiana. Darren Collison is an excellent athlete with great mobility and quickness and is a very good defender, very game disciplined. He was trained at UCLA having Ben Howland as a coach. However, there are voices who say that his shooting mechanics aren’t skilled enough yet.

Miami vs Toronto won with 92 points while Toronto scored 89. James Posey scored six points and had 13 rebounds. Shaquille O’Neal scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds while Udonis Haslem added another 16 points for Miami.

New Orleans OKC scored 119 points in a game played against Milwaukee that had 18 points less, making this the Buck’s 7th loss. Brandan Wright is Milwaukee’s exceptional third freshman and second power forward. His abilities and techniques are compared to those of LaMarcus Aldridge. He has very good instincts and a great shot blocking potential.
___________________________________________________________________
Cleveland won with 101 points over Minnesota that scored only 88 points. LeBron James scored 31 points and had 12 rebounds although two days before this game, he had some serious knee problems.

With a 5 points difference Phoenix team won the game with Memphis Grizzlies, scoring 116 points. Amare Stoudemire had 27 points for the winning team and Pau Gasol scored 23 points and had 11 rebounds for Memphis. Memphis Grizzlies’ Greg Oden is a 7 feet talented young man who is often compared to David Robinson.

San Antonio Spurs won the game with Seattle with 110-91. Bruce Bowen led the Spurs with 18 points and Chris Wilcox scored 20 points for Seattle.

Dallas Mavericks won the game with Sacramento with a 97 to 93 score. Josh Howard had 29 points for the Mavericks and Ron Artest scored 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Kings.

Finally, Denver Nuggets won with 111 points over LA Lakes who scored 6 points less. Carmelo Anthony scored 31 points for the winning team and Kobe Bryant led the LA Lakers with 39 points. This is the LA Lakers’ 3rd lost game out of four played.

With all the dynamics of the NBA in 2007 we can expect to see some excellent plays and spectacular slam dunks. Thank you for reading this article and I hope you will also go through the other informative resources on US sports.

Top 10 Tallest Players in Nba History

Sunday, November 30th, 2008
Marcus Robbins asked:

10 Tallest Players in NBA History

1.) Manute Bol

Height: 7′7”   Weight: 225 Pounds

Manute Bol played 10 seasons in the NBA (1985-1995). He played for four different teams: Washington Bullets, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, and Philadelphia 76ers. He averaged 18.7 minutes played per game over his career, but only 4.2 rebounds and 2.6 points per game. Considering all he has to do is catch the ball and lay it into the basketball without jumping, how come he only averaged 2.6 points per game? He was known for his blocked-shot ability. He set a rookie record in his 1985-1986 rookie season blocking 397 shots. He is also tied for the most blocked shots in one-half with eleven and is tied for the most blocked shots for one quarter with eight, in which he accomplished twice. He still holds the record for most blocked shots per minute with (.176). He also played with Muggsy Bogues during the Bogues 1987 rookie season pairing the tallest and shortest players in NBA history in one season. He is also the only player in NBA history to block more shots then he has scored.

___________________________________________________________________
2.) Gheorghe Muresan

Height: 7′7”   Weight: 303 Pounds

Gheorghe Muresan played only 6 seasons in the NBA (1993-2000). He played for two different teams, the Washington Bullets and New Jersey Nets. He averaged 21.9 minutes per game over his career, but only 6.4 rebounds and 9.8 points per game. Another big man, yet a fairy low rebounds/per game average. Some of you might remember Gheorghe Muresan from the movie “My Giant” (1998), where he starred with Billy Crystal and Kathleen Quinlan.

3.) Yao Ming

Height: 7′6”   Weight: 310 Pounds

Yao Ming played 6 full seasons and is still currently in his 7th season in the NBA (2002-Present). He has played for the Houston Rockets his whole career in the NBA. He averaged 32.6 minutes per game, while ripping down 9.2 rebounds and scoring 19 points per game till this day. Unlike the 2 tallest centers in the NBA, Yao Ming has been a workhorse and knows how to tally a stat sheet and is the only player in the top 10 tallest NBA players that is still playing.

4.) Shawn Bradley

Height: 7′6”   Weight: 275 Pounds

Shawn Bradley played 12 seasons (1993-2005). He has played for three different teams:Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, and Dallas Mavericks, where he spent the majority of his career. He averaged 23.5 minutes, 6.3 rebounds and 8.1 points per game during his career. Although he did average 2.5 blocks per game over his career, he has been known for a “Giant” who got dunked on many time.

5.) Chuck Nevitt

Height: 7′5”   Weight:250 Pounds

Chuck Nevitt played 9 seasons in the NBA (1982-1994). He did not play in 3 seasons over the 12 years of his career. He played for five teams throughout his career: Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls, and San Antonio Spurs. He did not play more then 45 games in any season and just averaged 5.3 minutes, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.6 points per game throughout his career. Throughout his career he basically got play time during garbage minutes meaning his team usually had a big lead or was down to much to make a comeback, especially in Detroit. While in Detroit, the fans called Detroit’s blow-outs, when Nevitt was able to get his minutes, “Nevitt Time”. His nine seasons of minutes played totaled up to be about the length of 18 full NBA games.

6.) Slavko Vranes

Height: 7′5”   Weight: 275 Pounds

Slavko Vranes only played three minutes in one game with the Portland Trailblazers during his entire NBA career (2003-2004). He was drafted by the New York Knicks in 2003, but was released during the season, not playing one minute of any Knicks game. The Portland Trailblazers signed him a month after his release from the New York Knicks to a 10-day contract, where he played his only three minutes in the NBA.

7.) Mark Eaton

Height: 7′4”   Weight: 290 Pounds

Mark Eaton played 11 seasons in the NBA (1982-1993) and spent his whole career with the Utah Jazz. He averaged 28.8 minutes, 7.9 rebounds, and 6.0 points per game throughout his career. Mark Eaton was known for being a monster on defense averaging 3.5 blocks per game over his career and during his third season in the NBA he averaged a whopping 5.6 blocks per game.

8.) Rik Smits

Height: 7′4”   Weight: 265 Pounds

Rik Smits played 12 seasons in the NBA (1988-2000). Just like Mark Eaton, Rik Smits played his NBA career with one team, the Indiana Pacers. He averaged 26.6 minutes played, 6.1 rebounds, and 14.8 points scored per game during his career. Similar to Ralph Sampson and Mark Eaton, Rik Smits has had very a productive career.

9.) Ralph Sampson

Height: 7′4”   Weight: 235 Pounds

Ralph Simpson played 9 seasons in the NBA (1983-1992). He played for four different teams: Houston Rockets, (where he spent the first half of his career), Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, and Washington Bullets. He averaged 29.8 minutes played, 8.8 rebounds, and 15.4 points per game throughout his NBA career. He was teammates with another 7-foot player ,Hakeem Olajuwon, they were nicknamed the “Twin Towers”.Throughout the middle of his career he battled knee injuries because of his big frame and when he was traded for the Rockets he was never able to stay healthy for a full season of games battling with knee and back injuries.

10.) Priest Lauderdale

Height: 7′4”   Weight: 325 Pounds

Priest Lauderdale only played 2 seasons in the NBA (1996-1998). He played one season with the Atlanta Hawks and one season with the Denver Nuggets. During his two-year career in the NBA, he averaged 7.1 minutes, 1.9 rebounds, and 3.4 points. After he left the NBA, he went to play basketball in Bulgaria.

Manu Ginobili Had Successful Ankle Surgery

Sunday, November 30th, 2008
Claudia Beckford asked:

The 31-year-old San Antonio Spurs player Manu Ginobili was hospitalized this week in order to have a repair surgery for his left ankle. Previous to his final decision the player had been struggling with the injury and despite the therapy and rehabilitation his doctors advised, his ankle kept bothering him.

Ginobili, who is an Argentinean-Italian born has played in the NBA since 2002 when he signed with the Spurs and ever since he has played a total of six season with the San Antonio team. Manu is also part of the Argentinean national team and he played during the Olympics games in Beijing, his talent as a guard was of extreme aid to the team as they achieved the bronze medal but it was made clear his efforts triggered the injury again which became a more serious concern for the basketball player. Even Ginobili himself stated that he would have wanted to be part of the final game Argentina played during the tournament but he knew he could not put more stress on his condition.

Spurs’ doctors had previously made some tests to his injury but there was no sign of improvement, reason why both the doctors and Ginobili decided to have the surgery.
___________________________________________________________________
“They’re going to perform a surgery on me. Now, the thing is, the injury is not worse but it’s not better either, and it seems like the only way to repair it completely is arthroscopic surgery.” indicated the player to the Argentina’s La Nacion newspaper.

Manu’s surgery was performed by Dr. Richard Ferkel in a Los Angeles hospital and it was announced that it was a complete success. Ginobili will have to walk with crutches for more less three weeks but right after that he will be able to begin his regular therapy and he could then think about going back to play for his team which could be in the first weeks of the new season.

There is no doubt that Ginobili will be missed by the Spurs since for the 2008-09 season he was expected to be a leading man in the team, and especially after last season’s performance averaging more assists, points and rebounds as to his input during the playoffs where the Spurs wiped off teams like the Suns, the Cavaliers, and the Nuggets

As the surgery was only done a few days ago, there is no time frame established for his comeback as he will need to be monitored by his doctors and there should be signs of improvements, otherwise neither the Spurs nor the player will risk going back to the arena. The latest news state Ginobili’s absence will be of two or three months but let’s just hope for the best that he will be able to get back on his feet again sooner so that we – NBA fans – will enjoy watching this incredible basketball player leading the Spurs to another conference title as he has previously done.

Chances for Winning by the Losers

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008
Jeff Zell asked:

In baseball, it has come close (see 2005 San Diego Padres, 1973 NY Mets). In the NFL, only two .500 teams have made the playoffs since 1991 (1991 NYJ, 2004 STL). In the NBA, however, it has been the norm to find teams with a losing record compete in late April and into May.

Below, a table of the number of .500 win percentage teams, the number of first round games they have won, and the number of series they have gone on to win.

First Round Playoff Stats Last 10 Years

Year Teams at .500 or under Total first round games won Series Won

1996 2 2 0

1997 3 2 0

1998 1 2 0

1999 1 1 0

2000 0 0 0

Parody just hasn’t existed in the NBA playoffs. These 15 teams in the last 10 years have combined to win just 12 playoff games and have never advanced. In 2004, four teams in the East had the shot and surely one could pull off the upset? Not even the four vs. five could do it.

The last time a team with a losing record entered the playoffs and won a Series was 1988. Then, the Seattle Supersonics boasted a 39-43 record as the 7-seed and made it all the way to the conference finals. They upset both Dallas and Houston, before being swept by Pat Riley’s Los Angeles Lakers. Since Seattle, a total of 31 teams have entered the playoffs with a record at or below .500. And these teams are 0-31 in playoff series.

So, how good of a chance do Milwaukee (40-42), Chicago (41-41) and Indiana (41-41) have this year? I’m not going to say “none,” because that’s why they play the game—but let’s delve into these match-ups.

(1) Detroit vs. (8) Milwaukee

One-seeds haven’t lost since 1999. But there was a technicality about that year: First, 1999 was the NBA lockout year, and only 50 regular season games were played. Second, three other teams had the same 33-17 record, but Miami won by a tiebreaker.

In a full 82-game season, it was the 1994 Denver Nuggets who upset the top-seeded Supersonics to advance to the second round.

With Flip Saunders at the helm, we’ve seen the Pistons play looser offensively, but still maintaining impressive defense—leading them to their best regular season record ever (64-18). Don’t worry about the nonsense concerning Ben Wallace not getting along with Flip: This team is focused when it comes to the playoffs.

Having said this, Milwaukee has their hands full. Let’s just look at player vs. player matchups.

Detroit Milwaukee Advantage

PG Billups Ford Detroit

SG Hamilton Redd Detroit

SF Prince Simmons Detroit

PF R. Wallace Bogut Detroit

C B. Wallace Magloire Detroit

Billups will substitute size for speed and can dominate Ford. Hamilton is a workhorse. Prince is undoubtedly better than Simmons. And I’ll just point out the experience from the front court to suffice my argument for the Wallaces.

To make matters worse, the only type of success they had against Detroit was when they played Toni Kukoc at the three. Kukoc is already banged up and will miss the first game, so his health will be a definite factor.

Prediction: Pistons in a sweep

(2) Miami vs. (7) Chicago

Chicago is the hottest of the East’s bottom-3, finishing 12-2 in their final 14 to slip into the show. They had a similar run in the final month of the season last year, winning 15 of their last 19 games. The Bulls’ only win against the Heat in the regular season came back on April 15 when the Heat rested most of their stars.

In the playoffs, it comes down to defense and though the “Baby Bulls” are young, they do buckle down, leading the NBA for the second straight season in defensive field-goal percentage (.426).

Offensively, the Bulls’ patented “drive-and-kick” out game has given opposing teams a hard time. Ben Gordon ranks 2nd in the Eastern Conference, hitting 43.9-percent from 3-point land, and point-guard Kirk Hinrich has shot 42.9-percent from behind the arc in his last five games.

Although the Heat have been locked into the No. 2 spot since basically January, I don’t see them having trouble kicking into high gear. Even when the Bulls shut down Wade in their meetings this year (12.3 ppg), the Heat have found a way to win.

The Bulls have no answer for Shaq, who had 14 points and 6 rebounds in just 20 minutes of action on April 15.

Prediction: Heat in 5

(3) New Jersey vs. (6) Indiana

This might very well be the best shot for a team at the .500 mark in the regular season to win a Series. The Nets came from the weak Atlantic Division that sent no other teams beside themselves to the playoffs. The two teams have similar defensive work ethics, as they are 5th and 6th in points allowed, respectively, in the NBA. The interesting thing about this series is the way they view each other: New Jersey players have said the Pacers are a good transition and look to slow it down, while Indiana players have said the exact same thing about the Nets! Wow, this should be a fun series to watch!

Jermaine O’Neal looks to be healthy into the playoffs, having played 30-plus minutes in his final 11 regular season games, but I don’t foresee him being the difference. The difference must come from the defense side of the ball, in particular, the ability to stop Vince Carter.

Peja Stojakovic and Stephen Jackson must play top-notch to pull the upset.

I have a feeling this series will go seven. The Nets were 29-12 at home, fourth-best home record in the Eastern conference, so that’s the way I lean.

Prediction: Nets in 7
